Dakota - Full track!
(2.2 MB)
(Bill Evans, Fifth Child Music, BMI)
A banjo instrumental in the key of B, featuring hot solos
from all of the band members. Bill was thinking of Terry Baucom's
playing as well as Herschel Sizemore's great instrumental "Rebecca"
when he put this tune together. The tune was written coincidentally
on the anniversary of John Lennon's passing, hence the title "Dakota."
The
Good Times We Never Had (940 KB)
(Jim Nunally, BMI)
Jim captures some great bluegrass intensity in his bluesy
original that features some wonderful fiddling from Chad.
Sandy
Marsh/Fast Ruby (The Slowest Mule) (944 KB)
(Chad Manning, In-The-Midst Music, BMI)
These tunes show that Chad is coming into his own both as
a great composer and as a fiddler who is skilled in bluegrass as well
as old time, Irish, jazz and swing styles. The first tune in this
medley could be described as a "bluegrass/Middle Eastern fusion"
while the second is just a great bluegrass jam tune.
Cumberland
Furnace (944 KB)
(Bill Evans, Fifth Child Music, BMI)
Along with Sonny Osborne, Bill hosts an annual music camp
in the Nashville area called the NashCamp Fall Banjo Retreat. At the
2002 camp, Tony Trischka challenged Bill and Ned Luberecki to each
compose a new instrumental that would collectively be called "Cumberland
Furnace." This tune was Bill's contribution to this effort. As
you might be able to hear, Bill took Earl Scruggs' familiar banjo
theme from "Cumberland Gap" and cycled it through a number
of keys - from G, to C, F and Bb.
Mexicali Moonshine
(944 KB)
(Erik Thomas, Fifth Child Music, BMI)
Due West goes south of the border via Erik's catchy instrumental which
manages to fuse bluegrass, swing and Latin ideas in a way that's perfectly
suited to both Erik's mandolin style and Cindy's background as a jazz
bassist.
